How points and hours allocation works
Each role is given a point weighting reflecting its contribution to the guest experience. The weighting is multiplied by the hours that person actually worked, which stops a full-timer and someone who did two shifts receiving the same amount. The pool is then divided in proportion to those units.
The judgement is in the weightings, not the arithmetic. Since the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2024 the allocation must be fair across everyone contributing to service, which in most kitchens means the back of house is in the scheme rather than tipped informally at the end of the night. Whatever you settle on has to be written down, applied consistently and explainable to the person receiving it.
Crucially, the split has to be decided by an independent troncmaster. A calculator — this one included — models the outcome; it does not make the arrangement compliant.
Frequently asked questions
- How is a tronc distribution normally calculated?
- The most common method is points multiplied by hours worked. Each role carries a point weighting reflecting its contribution, that weighting is multiplied by the hours the person actually worked in the period, and the tip pool is shared in proportion to the resulting units.
- Should kitchen staff be included in the tronc?
- They can be, and since the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2024 the allocation must be fair across everyone who contributes to the customer experience. Excluding the kitchen entirely is hard to defend where they are part of delivering the service.
- Does this calculator decide our allocation?
- No. It models a points-and-hours split so you can see the effect of different weightings. Under HMRC's rules the allocation must be decided by an independent troncmaster, and that decision — not a spreadsheet or a tool — is what keeps qualifying tips outside employer National Insurance.
- Can we deduct card processing fees from the pool before distributing?
- No. Deductions from qualifying tips have been unlawful since the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2024 provisions took effect in October 2024, so the whole pool must reach staff.
