What we do differently

Who each option suits

A software-led provider suits you if you already have a competent internal troncmaster who is genuinely independent of ownership, and what you need is tooling to calculate and distribute faster.

An appointed independent troncmaster suits you if nobody internally can credibly hold the role, if you operate multiple sites with different allocation rules, if you have agency workers in the pot, or if you want someone outside the business to answer for the arrangement when it is questioned.

Questions to ask any tronc provider

Whether you go with us, with TroncBox, or stay as you are, these are the questions that decide whether a tronc actually holds up:

Who is the troncmaster on paper? If that person is an owner, director or someone who reports to one, the independence HMRC requires is weak.
Who decides the allocation? Software that applies rules the employer sets is not the same as an independent person deciding them.
Where do the records live? The Tips Act requires three years of records and a written policy available to workers on request.
What happens under challenge? Ask who answers HMRC, and who defends the allocation if a worker takes it to a tribunal.
Are deductions taken? Card fees and admin deductions from the tip pool have been unlawful since 1 October 2024.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch tronc providers mid-year?: Yes. The scheme continues; the troncmaster changes. We take over the allocation rules, reconcile the pot to date, and pick up the record trail from the previous arrangement so there is no gap in the three years of records the Tips Act requires.
Will switching disturb the National Insurance treatment?: Not if the scheme remains genuinely independent throughout. The NIC position depends on the employer not controlling the allocation, not on which provider administers it. We document the handover so the independence is evidenced across the change.
Do you replace our payroll?: No. The tronc runs alongside your existing payroll. We instruct the tronc amounts each period and your payroll processes them under PAYE.
